My quest to find the best of the best dark chocolate started long, long ago. Being vegan and adverse to GMOs I was hard pressed to find something I could eat and relish.
I thought my quest had been answered back in the early to mid 90’s when I travelled down under with a bunch of guys making a martial arts movie.
I thought my quest had been answered back in the early to mid 90’s when I travelled down under with a bunch of guys making a martial arts movie.
On the Gold Coast, in Surfer’s Paradise, there was a store called, Chocolate to Die For. Thinking my dream came true I went in. The chocolate was dark and rich and the smell was overwhelming. After tasting a piece I asked what the ingredients were.
At first the answer was, “It’s a chocolate to die for mate”. After some persistence I was given a sheet of paper with the ingredients. Everything looked good until I got to the lecithin. Same ol’ crap but in a different country.
What a horror it was not being able to eat chocolate for about four years.
When I got back to Honolulu I fell into the dark chocolate candy-bar cycle. I hated that. I tried to eat one or two squares but my taste buds went crazy and I would wind up eating all of it at once. All I wanted was organic dark chocolate with no GMO crap and individually wrapped little chunks.
Before going further, please allow me to tell you why I was hooked on only dark chocolate.
For openers I am a vegan and stay away from dairy products. Next, dark chocolate contains flavanoids. Flavanoids offer incredible health benefits, which include cardio-protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and free-radical protection capabilities. And that’s the tip of the iceberg.
Dark chocolate contains soluble fiber and is loaded with minerals like iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, potassium, phosphorous, zinc and selenium. It is an incredible source of antioxidants and polyphenols.
Believe it or not, dark chocolate can improve blood flow and have an effect on lowering blood pressure to a small degree. With regard to the cardio-protective aspect, dark chocolate’s antioxidants lower the oxidized LDL and increase the HDL. LDL is the bad one and HDL is the good one.
Because of protecting against the oxidation of LDL, dark chocolate causes way less cholesterol to accumulate in the arteries and lowers the risk of heart disease. In addition, the flavanols improve blood flow to the skin and can increase the density of the skin and its hydration.
So, one day I come across a dark chocolate that not only looks to good to be true but also has stuff in it that blew my mind. It was a totally organic dark chocolate that contained flower essences. Whaaat? Exactly!
So, I do more research and I find that the flower essences contain subtle energetic particles that work along the acupuncture meridians to balance from within and are good for stress relief by dissolving the imbalances in the bodily system. To add more incredible joy, all the chocolate is GMO-free, gluten free, 30 calories per piece, 2 grams of carbs per piece and totally soy free. This meant that I could finally be in control of how much I would consume at one time to satisfy my decadence.
So, I take a walk on the wild side and order some. It was like a dream come true. I have never in my life tasted any dark chocolate this incredible and I am already on my second batch and happier than a pig in doo-doo.
