Years and years ago in Hawaii there was a local television Anchor and now a Lead Weight (aren’t euphemisms great) named Bob Jones that ruled for years.
After he retired from his TV position, his peers revered him and capitalizing on his fame became a columnist for a weekly rag called Midweek.
I always took Bob with a grain of salt because he was more full of himself than anything else.
After he retired from his TV position, his peers revered him and capitalizing on his fame became a columnist for a weekly rag called Midweek.
I always took Bob with a grain of salt because he was more full of himself than anything else.
Recently, he wrote an article entitled, Poor Leaders hurt Anti-GMO Efforts.
While most of our so-called “leaders” are hookers for Monsanto and the rest, there are a few that oppose biotech.
One in particular, Gary Hooser, has been fighting for the people on Kauai to get a distinct buffer zone between where GMOs are planted and where people live and go to school. But, all the bad guys oppose this because they want their payoffs to continue.
Anyway, ol’ Bob wrote an article that got my attention and ticked me off. I will put his article first and my response second and then ask you to do something.
Bob:
This is not going to make local anti-GMOers jump for joy, but the news is that everything seems to be going against you.
The government has approved genetically modified potatoes to reduce the amount of a chemical in French fries and potato chips suspected of causing cancer. (The GMO potato company supplies McDonald’s). [Bob is talking about acrilamides, which proliferate when foods are cooked at very high temperatures].
And the Department of Agriculture says that it has no regulatory authority to stop “genome edited” Roundup-resistant grass, herbicide-resistant canola corn or an ornamental plant that glows in the dark.
Next up for approval is a genetically modified salmon from Aqua Bounty Technologies. It will grow much larger much quicker that standard farmed salmon (aka natural) and was created by micro-injection of a gene into fertilized eggs of wild Atlantic salmon.
Scared by all this? Don’t be. At least not yet. A team of Italian scientists has analyzed 1,783 studies about the safety and environmental impact of GMO foods and didn’t find anything hinting that they pose any harm to humans. That analysis was published in Critical Reviews in Biotechnology (March 2014, Vol. 34, No.1).
What’s happened locally on the GMO front is that any legitimate concerns about engineered food and pesticides used on experimental crops were pre-empted by the low-on-facts, high-on-emotion rants by such as Kauai politician Gary Hooser and Molokai activist Walter Ritte. (Walter is another good guy that got motivated because the island of Molokai was virtually turned into a desert be the GMOs proliferating the island by the winds).
Something likely could have been worked out with the GMO companies had concerned people not let their self-appointed leaders use bad science and tactics like Facebook posting, “MONSANTO IS POISONING OUR CHILDREN!” to fuel a protest.
Example: Occupy Honolulu. It began as a protest against the richest 1 percent, then morphed to De-Occupy, protesting America’s annexing of Hawaii and finally, against laws to keep homeless off the sidewalks, But the leaders moved their own tents, couches, tables, TVs and generators onto the sidewalks. Most of us felt that was a bad trade-off and, in short order, De-Occupy lost followership and faded away.
In both cases above, semi-worthy efforts were led down a dead end by leaders more focused on their own ego fulfillment than politically smart strategies.
Civics lesson? Avoid showoff leaders. Don’t overestimate people’s willingness to endorse your protest. Be willing to settle for less than the whole enchilada.
Hesh:
It’s not the poor leaders that hurt anti-GMO efforts, it’s the self-proclaimed know-it-all alleged objective reporters like you that do.
The points you made in your article clearly show how far removed from the GMO truths you are.
The government has approved GMOs only because former biotech employees and/or attorney’s head various government agencies and the Supreme Court.
The team of Italian scientists that found nothing wrong with GMOs were biotech scientists.
When Bush Sr. was president he approved the doctrine of Substantial Equivalence. The essence of that doctrine was that a chemically made seed is no different from a God made seed. As such, the safety reports are coming only from the biotech industry and are about as objective as you are. In addition, the duration of such a report needs to only cover a 3 month study.
Why do you ignore the Seralini report that covered over 3 years and found that glyphosate exposure leads to cancer?
Why do you ignore the Andreas Carrasco report that proved the glyphosate link to birth defects?
Why do you ignore the Seneff report that links glyphosate to autism?
Do you remember what happened in Viet Nam when both sides were exposed to Agent Orange? Birth defects, cancer, debilitating diseases, which cannot be denied nor cured. Yet, the corn fields in the U.S. have been approved by our government to be sprayed with 2-4-D, the active ingredient of Agent Orange under the guise that while it’s bad to be exposed to the spray, it’s ok to be ingested.
If for once you could actually be honest and objective you might be respected by those that are not impressed by your relying on some alleged respect you received from the “sheeple”.
You might want to tune into “Health Talk” this coming Saturday morning (1/17/15) on K108 (108 or 1080 am) at 8 am and call in to refute Dr. Stephanie Seneff a PhD from MIT (Massachucetts Insitute of Technology) about her findings of autism coming from glyphosate exposure.
I realize that a PhD does not carry the same speculative, non-objective vision that you do, but I’m sure we’d love to hear your intelligent and objective insights and expertise. Who knows, maybe it will make Saturday Night Live.
See you on the radio, assuming you have the guts to call in. 524-1080
He never called in!
Because he never called in I sent him the following email:
It was good that you never called in to the show because you would have been greatly embarrassed. Next, Gary Hooser and Walter Ritte are for the people and you owe them an apology. On a final note, it would be in your best interests to stop being an arrogant know-it-all, to side with the people, and to stop bending over forward for the biotech industry, especially since they don’t use Vaseline.
Aloha!
Not that’s all been said there a couple of other things.
1- Please go to www.healthtalkhawaii.com, click on Podcasts and listen to the 1/17/15 show with Dr. Seneff. It is extremely important you hear what she had to say.
2- Contact Bob Jones and give him your best shot. [email protected].
He’ll be so happy you did. Seriously, people like this need to hear from us and be put in their place.
Aloha!
